Things to know before you arrive

The local residents of Rwanda are incredibly welcoming and if you’re lucky they may express this welcome through song and dance. Most of them speak French and/or English, so communicating shouldn’t be a major concern. Accessing cash can be difficult as ATM machines are not widely available so try to bring enough cash to last you a while – and don’t forget to keep it safe.

Another thing to be mindful about Rwanda is that non-biodegradable plastic bags are not allowed; this rule is enforced by fines and potential imprisonment! It’s best to leave your plastics at home as Rwanda is on a mission to become one of the first plastic-free countries in the entire world.
