Where is Mozambique?

Mozambique is located on the East coast of Africa, it has a long coastline along the Indian ocean and borders Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Due to political division, Mozambique is quite an odd shape and some safaris may take you back and forth over the Mozambique border due to its winding nature. Travellers will often fly into the capital Maputo via direct flights from Portugal, Johannesburg or Cape Town. Once in Mozambique there are smaller flight companies, boats and even helicopter options to get you around on your holiday package tour.

Things to know before you arrive

Mozambique is a very tropical country, with temperatures 15°C to 31°C. It’s important to remember to bring plenty of sunscreen if you’re going to be doing a lot of beach adventures! It’s important to note that January and February is the cyclone season in southern Mozambique, so be aware of booking tours around that time that there can occasionally be extreme weather conditions. If you’re going to Mozambique in search of safaris, August and September are the best time, as wildlife is more closely concentrated around watering holes.

Luxury is something often sought after when planning a holiday package including Mozambique. There are lots of things to do in Maputo, and with perfect access to the exciting bars and markets of Maputo, The Southern Sun is a great place for couples and families, as well as solo travellers taking a rest on a larger safari package tour.

The two biggest cities, Maputo and Pemba, offer their own unique experiences. Maputo has a strong colonial influence and many beautiful heritage buildings to explore. Not only that, but it is rich in East African culture, with a unique mix of traditional and modern influences, from eclectic bazzars to hip hip bars, there is something for every kind of traveller in a holiday package including Maputo. In Pemba, the Portuguese influence on building culture is very apparent. Pemba is known for its gorgeous beaches and one of a kind seafood restaurants and bars, you will find a mix of rich fusion food available amongst other delights like markets and museums.

And if a real beach getaway is what you are after, the Bazaruto Archipelago has everything you need for a perfect beach holiday. A patchwork of truly fantastical islands nestled in the INdian Ocean, the Archipelago is home to galumphing dugong, large, loveable sea creatures believed to be the origins of the mermaid myth. The coral reefs are also home to more than 2000 species of fish as well as humpback whales and dolphins. As you can imagine, there is every type of ocean activity you could imagine here! From snorkelling to canoeing, jet skiing and diving, everyone in the family can find something that they will enjoy.

Staying safe in Mozambique

Like other countries in Africa, it’s important to be aware of mosquito borne diseases and protect yourself against them. Make sure when you book your trip you consult a doctor about diseases like yellow fever and malaria and make sure you have all your required vaccinations before leaving. If you will be spending a lot of time in the sun and on the beach, it’s important to stay hydrated! Always stock up on bottled water, sunscreen and keep an eye out for signs of sun stress.
