Malawi

Malawi is a beautiful, diverse country, home to a variety of wildlife and cultural experiences. The perfect place to see the Big Five, visit diverse lake systems or learn about the rich mosaic of Malawian culture.

Lake Malawi, the “Lake of Stars” supports more species of fish than any other lake in the world. Snorkelling and diving adventures are spectacular, and can be enjoyed alongside sailing, wind-surfing, water-skiing and canoeing. Boasting busting local communities and beautiful sandy beaches, Likoma Island offers exclusive natural beauty. Activities on the island include birdwatching, cultural visits, cycling and hiking safaris. Guests enjoy the opportunity to sit on a mountain cliff above Cape Maclear, watching the brilliant red sun sink into Lake Malawi, offering unforgettable sunsets. From the islands, guests enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving surrounded by myriad of brightly coloured fish.

Liwonde National Park, the premier wildlife reserve in Malawi, incorporates the Shire River as well as quiet backwaters and lagoons, marshes, open savannah country, woodland and hills. With the rich diversity of habitats, the extensive variety of plant, animal and birdlife offer what is arguably the best birding location in central and southern Africa. Malawi is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa” as the gentle, friendly people welcome and ensure an unforgettable holiday.

Majete Wildlife Reserve is home to all of the “Big Five”, eland, sable, nyala and hartebeest, among a variety of other mammals. The community involvement and social upliftment are an inspiration story, which we are proud to support.

The unique slab of mountain, the Zomba Plateau, is covered by streams, waterfalls and lakes. The tracks around the top are glorious with views once described as “the best in the British Empire”. Sightings of leopard are rare, although these beautiful creatures are certainly in residence.

A popular destination for our southern African holiday packages

One of the magnificent attractions in Malawi is the Majete Wildlife Reserve, home to all of the “Big Five”, among a variety of other mammals. For wildlife viewing, the dry season from April to August is the best time to visit. After decades of terrible poaching, the restoration of Malawi’s parks and the reintroduction of species make it a great country to see wildlife without the expense that is required to go on safari in some neighbouring countries. Malawi is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa” as the gentle, friendly people welcome and ensure an unforgettable holiday. The community involvement and social upliftment of the Malawian is an inspirational story, which we are proud to support.

Another special feature in Malawi is the unique slab of mountain, the Zomba Plateau. The plateau is covered by streams, waterfalls and lakes and leopards are known to be spotted in the area along with prey animals. Dramatic safari adventures for you to the tracks around the top of the plateau, with glorious views that can only be found here.

Where is Malawi?

Located in southern Africa, Malawi is a landlocked country that borders Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. Although landlocked, Malawi is almost 20% water. ‘Malawi’ means ‘fire flames’, taking its name from the reflection of the rising sun on the waters of the vast Lake Malawi. The lake also contains the largest number of fish species of any lake in the world!

Malawi has two international airports you can get to from neighbouring countries, however many tours will start in other countries and have you cross one of the many land borders during your safari travels.

Things to know before you arrive

Like most African countries for your travel to Malawi. Always check for the most up-to-date information when consulting with your travel doctor. Due to the large amount of freshwater resources, the country’s area is home to an abundant mosquito population, so make sure to bring adequate protection. Malawi has a wet and a dry season, so make sure to be extra careful of mosquitos during wet season, and make sure to pack wet weather clothes if you’re going on safari between December and March. There is an e-visa requirement for Malawi so make sure to complete any necessary documentation while preparing for your travels.
